Visitors from a card society

An American guest checking out asked me if I could lend him 200 yen to get to the airport and add it to his bill, Since he was short of Japanese yen. I told him that we couldn't, do that, but suggested that instead we could offer to exchange some of his dollars at the rate of 116 yen per dollar, which was actually 5 yen better than the rate that day of 111 yen. He got 222 yen for his 2 American dollars. He asked me why train tickets couldn't be bought simply with a credit card instead of bothering with cash; I was not able to answer him.

Another customer asked at checkout if he could "use American Express." At that time I thought American Express was a railway company, so I patiently explained to him by way of answer that American planes do fly to Japan, but we don't have any American trains here...

When people from other countries would call for reservations, some of them would have to give up their plans to stay with us, because they didn't carry Japanese yen. These experiences caused us to arrange to accept Amex, Visa and Master Card so that more visitors could stay at our ryokan.

I have head that in "card societies," the credit card is actually trusted more than cash itself, Since cash can be counterfeit, and it is also dangerous to keep large amounts of it.
Moreover, it is those who use these cards for their daily transactions that are trusted more than those who deal only in cash.

We do not now have any problems with credit card payments, and in fact, they make up about half of our annual income. the best thing about using the credit cards, for us, has been our ability to guarantee reservations using card numbers.

The other day, I went to a hospital with a foreign customer who had an asthma attack in the middle of the night.  When he felt better and tried to make payment, he told us he could only pay by credit card. So I arranged for the payment at the hospital.  He wondered why he could pay with a credit card at a hospital in his own country, but not in Japan.

Japan is still a cash country for the visitors from a credit card society.
